ASAP will be presenting at the African Society for Laboratory Medicine’s 2016 Conference in Cape Town, “Laboratory Medicine in Africa: Combatting Global Health Threats”. We will be sharing the results of Improving Anatomic Pathology Services in Sub-Saharan Africa to Support Cancer Care, a 17-month research project funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH) National Cancer Institute (NCI), focused on determining the best approach to improve the ability of the anatomic pathology workforce in Eastern, Central, and Southern Africa (ECSA) to detect and diagnose cancer using standard approaches that are commonly in use in the United States and the European Union.
Happenings
ASAP in collaboration with the College of Pathologists of East, Central and Southern Africa (COPECSA) and Aga Khan University (AKU) held a successful 2.5 day workshop on cancer staging with over 20 pathologists from across the ECSA region and expert faculty from the United States, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zimbabwe.
The workshop series, held November 16-18, 2018; at AKU in Nairobi, Kenya, featured the following cancers:
- Head & Neck
- Breast
- Endometrial & Ovarian
- Gastric & Esophageal.
The sessions consisted of short, 30 minute lectures covering the most important information for solving the cases, 2-hour sessions for completing cases in small groups, and a 1-hour session where challenging, local cases were reviewed by the expert faculty.
